More Post-Obama Lunacy

John Faulkner and his wife, Brenda, thought Wednesday was a good day to buy a handgun.

"I'm 37 years old, and this is the first time in my life that I am really scared for our future," said Faulkner, an oil field worker, as he perused the collection of weaponry in A Pawn Shop here.

At Aurora's Firing Line gun shop, Steve Wickham was also purchasing. "Anything I can get my hands on," he said as he cradled a $699 9mm handgun.

Same thing in Lakewood: "I was selling guns before I even opened the door," said George Horne, owner of The Gun Room. "It's gone completely mad. Everyone is buying everything I've got on the shelves. Sales have been crazy."

By midday Wednesday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation's "Insta- Check" background check — required for the sale of a firearm and typically about 8 minutes long — was jammed with waits lasting more than two hours.

Gun-shop owners and buyers said the urgency was fueled by Barack Obama's presidential win and Democrats' increasing their majority in Congress.

"I'm here because of Obama," Wickham said. "I think he's misinterpreted the Second Amendment. It's not about the right to hunt. It's about the right to defend yourself."

The 4 million-member NRA dedicated $15 million of its $40 million campaign this year to painting Obama as a threat to the Second Amendment. In a mass fundraising letter sent to members this summer, NRA president Wayne LaPierre wrote, "Never in NRA's history have we faced a presidential candidate — and hundreds of candidates running for other offices — with such a deep-rooted hatred of firearm freedoms."

Obama's campaign, in a statement labeled "Supporting the rights and traditions of sportsmen," said he "will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport and use guns."

So not only is the scary black man going to take away their money and kill their babies and convert the nation to Islam, he's now going to disarm them. Just like Hitler!

It seems that many conservative Whites in America are going completely ga-ga over Obama's presidency. Previous to the election, we all heard the rumours that he was Muslim, that he was a dreaded socialist, etc etc etc.

I've said this before, but making out a person or group of people to be "the enemy" has been done many times before. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was an anti-Semitic text that convinced many that Jews were involved in a conspiracy to take over the world, create socialism, encourage immorality and conquer everyone and rule them as a vanquished people. It's over 100 years since this racist document was created but the tactics are just the same.

Let me be clear about this: Obama is not a wonderful human being. I am suspicious of anybody's involvement in politics - especially those who reach the highest point - because of the dirty hands and deeds they have done to get there. Moreover, it is entirely possible that Obama's time as president will be one punctuated by corruption and incompetence and his ousting may not come soon enough.

But that sort of attitude is a magnitude of difference away from these clowns buying up handguns and assault rifles. Ostensibly this is due to their fear that scary Barack is going to take their guns, but I think it is also partly due to overtly apocalyptic thinking (not the biblical sort, the Turner Diaries sort).

I have to say that I was relieved that election night and the day after has not seen any violence. But the news of people stocking up guns is highly disturbing.

To end, here are some definitions for you:

Bush-derangement syndrome - the anger felt at George W. Bush for the stupid things he has done.
Obama-derangement sydrome - the anger felt at Barack Obama for all the stupid things he is apparently going to do.
