Geothermal Power

From Slashdot:
The concept is simple to understand: earth's core heat transforms water into steam, which in turn causes a turbine to revolve. The potential, though, is enormous.
I've known about the potential of geothermal power since I did some research on it in High School (1986) but I remember having a conversation with a science type person who told me that it wouldn't work since the steam traveling in the "up" tube wouldn't stay hot enough to remain steam - which essentially meant that it would condense and fall back down.
